About Us

Firetail Farm

Please bear with us while we expand this page. Up to now we've been only word of mouth so this website is new this season.

Firetail Farm is owned and run by Ben and Magali (Mog to her friends) and is based in the Southern Huon Valley, on the edge of Far South Tasmania, Australia. We've been here for 4 years now and running a market garden for 3 years. We've also established 3 acres of orchard that's mostly for cider.

The Market Garden

It's really quite small in the world of vegetable production, but keeps us busy. We enjoy growing a diversity of vegetables and love the idea of forming a community around it. For this reason we mostly do vegetable boxes but also supply a couple of restaurants.

We produce veg out of 12 outdoor beds of 25 metres long by 90cm wide and 5 indoor beds of 24 metres by 90cm. Last year we got over 50kg of chillis from the polytunnel, which doesn't even include eggplants and tomatoes! So while we're small, we can bang out the veg ;o)

The Orchard

Soon after moving in we put in a 3 acre orchard of mostly cider apples, but also some quince, Perry pears, Damsons and what i'd call 'flavour' apples, like the strange one that tastes of Pineapple. It's all with a view to produce cider and juice once the trees come to maturity. As we chose rootstock for the hardiness, we have to wait longer than most orchards around us to see fruit. At the same time we've planted sparsely and are encouraging diversity with basic regenerative practises so as to avoid chemical use and maximise flavour in the fruit.
